The effects of red wine on health have been widely studied and thus the biannual World Congress, Wine & Health, is detailing the most important highlights and are the following:
-moderate consumption of wine reduces the risk of global mortality (deaths from any cause) in men and women of all ages. Moderate wine consumers have a 25% lower risk of death than abstainers and excessive drinkers.
-moderate consumption of wine reduces the risk of suffering a myocardial infarction or stroke in both men and women, compared to abstemios. These effects are attributed to a protective action on hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lipid profile and coagulation system.
-the consumption of white and red wines improves glucose metabolism and increases the beneficial cholesterol (HDL) in diabetic patients.
-the polyphenols of wine exert prebiotic properties, favoring healthy intestinal microbiota.
-the consumption of wine and specifically the resveratrol it contains is associated with greater longevity. This effect is similar to that observed after following a low-calorie diet, but without the heaviness that entails.
Moderate wine consumption reduces the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. There is increasing evidence of the effect of wine and its bioactive components on the preservation of mental function in older people. The intake of 100 ml of wine per day is sufficient to delay or prevent the development of cognitive impairment in older people (>65 years).
-moderate wine consumption is associated with a lower incidence of certain cancers. The results of the French CANCERCOOL study that has followed 35,292 men for more than 25 years suggest that 75% of cancers of the lung, lip, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx could be reduced by moderate consumption of wine, similar to the way fruits and vegetables do. In contrast, the consumption of other alcoholic beverages is accompanied by increased risk of this type of cancer. The topic of the relationship between alcohol and cancer is one of the most debated and recent results suggest that wine could have a different effect than other alcoholic beverages.
-wine alcohol, polyphenols and other components of wine have different (and complementary) protective effects on cells, tissues and organs. It is worth stressing the vasodilator effect of the nitric oxide synthesized by the vascular endothelium that reduces blood pressure in hypertensive subjects, the increase in HDL-cholesterol and apolipoproteins A1 and A2, which are associated with cardioprotection, and reduction of insulin resistance and, with it, the risk of developing diabetes.
-wine should be included in a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet. Recent studies indicate that wine would be responsible for 25% of the protective effects of the Mediterranean diet on health.
