What is organic wine?

Reference is made to the elaboration of this elixir, starting from a responsible and sustainable option with the environment. To do this, the experts are dedicated to creating wines of the highest quality, always guided in the process by nature.

This natural wine is exposed to strict control in each of the stages of elaboration, not only in the cultivation. Its main difference with respect to the traditional, is in its elaboration.

It is free of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. In addition, in these processes the damaged grape is discarded and the whole process is as natural as possible.

Characteristics of an organic wine

What stands out and differentiates organic wine from the rest is the way in which it is made. It meets a series of essential requirements to be part of this denomination and is of excellent quality.

Additionally, you must meet the following requirements:

  • No chemical additives may be used.
  • Under no circumstances mineral fertilizers are used.
  • They must always be natural of plant or animal origin.
  • The damaged grapes are discarded.
  • No machinery is used for plowing, sowing and harvesting.
  • It takes advantage of the late harvest to take full advantage of antioxidants in a natural way.
  • Stubble should not be burned after cultivation, as the idea is to maintain microbial flora.
  • It is characterized by being an organic wine without added sulfites.
  • Products made from GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) cannot be applied.
  • The carbon concentration in clarification should be low.
  • You can't dealcoholize wine.

Why organic wines

Conventional wines are healthy, and organic wines are healthier for several reasons and among them stands out the fact that organic farming allows the amount of polyphenols in wine to be higher and therefore healthier.

Polyphenols are an antioxidant responsible for the positive effects of wine on our health (such as the possible prevention of cardiovascular diseases and others related to aging). However, it should always be borne in mind that its consumption should be moderate.

More and more wineries produce organic wines and although the process of converting vineyards to organic in the early years is hard, in the future it compensates and improves the efficiency of the vineyard.

More and more organic wines of higher quality are produced.

Sooner rather than later, organic farming will become a necessity and not a fad.

Vineyard requirements

Biodynamic wine arises through procedures called greens, where the environment is the main element to highlight.

Thanks to its elaboration process, traces of negative products will not be consumed in the wine. Only sulfur and copper sulfate are allowed to be used, but even some wineries have preferred to eliminate them completely.

Neither chemical fertilizers nor any type of mineral fertilizer can be used. To help the growth of vine plants, what is used are organic fertilizers, such as animal manure.

Winemaking requirements

As for the winemaking process in the winery, the use of certain oenological techniques that are usually used in traditional wine is prohibited.

Among them we can mention the partial concentration by cold, the treatment with cation exchangers, the treatment by electrodialysis, the partial dealcoholization of the wine or the removal of sulfur dioxide by means of physical procedures.

It should be noted that the maximum of sulfites allowed is lower than in traditional wines. The maximum allowed is 100 mg / litre for red wine and 150 mg/litre for organic white wine.

What is the difference between an organic wine and a traditional one?

The main differences of the organic wine that makes it stand out from the traditional are:

  • Damaged grapes are not used throughout the harvest process.
  • 100% natural fertilizers are used.
  • No machinery of any kind is used, so the whole process is manual.
  • The land has no chemical compounds.
  • Low carbon levels are used for the clarification phase.
  • The cork to close the bottle is completely natural.
  • All processes and ingredients must be well explained on the label.

How to know if a wine is organic?

One of the main elements that can help us distinguish one from the other, is the purity in the sensations, making them more remarkable. In addition, they must bear a seal that guarantees the elaboration, according to ecological standards.

As is the case of the Ribera del Duero organic wine, for example, where respect for the land is the main difference, resulting in a production of wines of the highest quality.
