Over the last 20 years, more than 100,000 hectares of Garnacha variety have been uprooted in Spain. In the Qualified Denomination of Origin Rioja, the Garnacha has been passed to assume the 39% of the total vineyard area in the year 1973 to less than 8% by the year 2018.
For the first time in history, we are able to enjoy six wines made with the Garnacha variety, coming from six old vineyards, aged between 100 and 113 years, which have been selected for their special characteristics of orientation, exhibition and soil type. We are talking about historic, unrepeatable vineyards cultivated by more than four generations of “heroic” winegrowers who have decided to maintain the cultivation of these vineyards despite their lack of economic profitability.
We have in our hands the wine history of Rioja expressed through the terroir, that mixture of soil and climate, which is the essence of the great wines. In this case we find the same variety, the same winemaking (fermentation in 500 liter barrels), the same ageing (eleven months in French oak Troncais), the same wine growing area (Alto Valle del Najerilla, one of the coldest areas of Rioja) and a single variable: the terroir.
Only 600 bottles of each, have been produced because of their low production.
This collection is a tribute to the “battered” Garnacha and her growers.
