The Pedral grape is one of the varieties with the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin. A land that is characterized by its fresh and deliciously aromatic wines. The vineyards are located in the valleys, especially in the lower part of the mountains or ravines. Of course, the harvest is by hand and the process of making the wines is very artisanal.
The plant of this grape is not very vigorous and fertile. It prefers fresh soils with clayey characteristics, as well as long pruning. It does not resist drought well, so it is necessary to ensure that its hydration conditions are optimal.
In the same way, it is affected by high temperatures or heat waves to which it is especially sensitive. As it happens with powdery mildew, a disease that usually affects vines, including Pedral.
If properly cared for and pampered as it deserves, this plant will give a good production of compact bunches. As for its berries, these are of good size, tending to medium, of a blue color with light red touches.
When talking about single-varietal Pedral wines, we find that the broths are of a pink hue, especially if it is a young grape. Now, if the fruit is worked ripe it is possible that this gives it a more red hue, but without becoming intense or deep.
They are wines with good body and structure, with a good concentration of tannins and with a light alcoholic degree that achieves an ideal balance with its marked acidity. These characteristics make it cool, pleasant in passing, light and elegant.
Their fragrances are their most outstanding feature, since they are very aromatic wines, with marked notes of wild fruits, herbs and spices, with clear touches of dried fruits.
When they are aged in wooden barrels, something that by the way they are very good at, these perfumes distance themselves giving way to the notes of aging, such as leather and toasted.
It is very common to see it in mixtures with Tempranillo, Mouratón, Brula and Bastardillo, with which very interesting wines are made.
