What is the wine from the Verdejo grape like?

This grape gives a quality wine, fruity, full-bodied, very aromatic, round, straw yellow with greenish tints, rich in glycerin, usually with good acidity and a slight bitter taste when young; it is also suitable for aging.

It is somewhat sensitive to oxidation. In Spain, it is usually associated with Sauvignon Blanc, or Macabeo to achieve unique wines.

These wines are characterized by aromas of citrus, bitter almond, lime, fennel, citrus blossom, hay, tropical fruit, freshly cut grass, laurel, green melon, aniseed notes, grapefruit, white peach, pear, apple.

Characteristics of the Verdejo grape

In the glass, its pale golden color with greenish reflections resembles the sun's rays. The intensity of the nose announces some vegetable nuances, of fennel and anise, green apple and a slight tropical touch of ripe pineapple.

In the mouth it presents a well-integrated acidity with a slight touch of bitterness at the end that characterizes the Verdejo variety and invites us to another sip.

  • Its clusters are medium, cylindrical and short, more or less compact.
  • Small wings, medium and medium-long peduncles, with little or no lignification.
  • Berries short, small or medium, irregular, spherical or slightly elliptical.
  • Thick skin covered with a beautiful whitish-green to yellowish-green bloom in full maturity.
  • Very juicy yellowish-green soft pulp.
  • Its young leaves are very bright and blooming, very tan in color.

Production potential of the Verdejo grape

  • Its budding is from early to medium. Mature in the second period.
  • It is adapted to a dry and warm continental climate, prefers loamy, stony and moderately fertile soils that are not too dry.
  • It tolerates large temperature variations quite well.
  • Its growth habit is semi-erect with long drooping shoots.
  • It has an irregular average yield, and is more favorable to Guyot pruning.
  • It has an unfortunate tendency to produce numerous buds and suckers that must be removed when the time comes.
  • It withstands heat quite well, is somewhat resistant to mold, although a little less to powdery mildew and gray rot.

It is recommended to consume them at a temperature between 8ºC and 10°C. Verdejo wines are ideal to accompany fish, seafood, smoked, rice and pasta, cheeses, vegetables and soups, eggs and white meats and, of course, they are also perfect for aperitif and tapas.
