Production of barrels

Barrels, after the aging process, give the wine touches of leather, smoke, wood or spices. To achieve these effects of the best Spanish red wines, the way these barrels are made influences a lot.

These large tanks are handmade, molded by hand without using any type of glue to avoid strange flavors.

  • The first thing you do is cut boards about two centimeters thick, which will be the body of the barrel.
  • Then they are brushed and left to age, for at least two years.
  • They are placed inside a steel ring that helps to give the shape. It is essential to avoid leaving empty spaces.
  • Then proceed to moisten with steam to give it the shape without breaking the woods.
  • Finally and to be able to give the oaked wine its characteristic flavors, the barrel is smoked. Depending on how smoky it is inside, the more astringent it will be.

In this it will also affect the time of aging in barrel that the wine has. The longer the flavors are more accentuated than others.

You can also try the Tempranillo wine that is made with grapes that take less time to mature.

What types of barrels are there?

The barrels are usually also called vat or tonel and depending on the wood used in the aging process, the wine aged in barrels absorbs different flavors, aromas & nuances. Normally French or American oak barrels are the most used ones.

The barrels can be classified into:

American Oak

Its wood is more resistant and permeable, offering stronger touches in the wine in less time. It offers flavors with more character such as coffee and cocoa.

French Oak

It is usually a softer material, so the wine oxygenates more slowly. Thanks to it, it gives more subtle and delicate flavors.

Spanish Oak

It is more like French, ideal for red wines. Its composition offers vanilla and also smoked touches, being a great oenological potential.

Cherry Tree

It is a barrel that works very well with white and red wines. When toasted is medium it brings sharp nuances to plums and cherries.

Acacia

Depending on the level of toasting you have, you can distinguish two varieties. When it is not toasted it brings fresh touches so it is ideal for white wines, if, on the contrary, it is partially toasted, it is perfect for red wines.

What wines go through barrels?

There is the possibility that the wines are aged in barrels or in their own bottles. Depending on each winery, it can be aged with one or another method. The wines that go through barrels can be from the young, to the so-called Gran Reserva. The difference is in the time they have spent inside of it.

  • Oak or semi-aged spend between 6 to 12 months in barrels
  • Aged between 18 to 24 months
  • The reserve pass 3 years minimum
  • Gran reserva, at least 60 months

What is a barrel fermented wine?

Barrel fermented wines are fermented in oak barrels and not in stainless steel tanks. To make this happen, the grape must is placed directly in the wooden barrels, where the fermentation starts and must becomes wine.

How to recognize an oaked wine?

Usually, wines whether red or white that are aged in barrels, obtain fruity and woody flavours. Storing them in barrels allows the wine to live longer, giving it more complexity.

They acquire smoky and caramel notes, giving the wine more structure and body. Finally, through the palate and smell it can be determined whether a wine is aged in barrels or not.
